University English debate kicks off<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Thirty-six teams from 22 universities will take
\npart in a nationwide English debate competition, the second of
\nits kind here.<\/p>\n
The three-day event starting on Friday is called the
\nIndonesian Varsities English Debate 1999 and is being organized
\nby the Atma Jaya University on Jl. Sudirman in South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
"The preliminary rounds of the competition will be held at the
\nAtma Jaya University campus, while the final round and the
\nclosing ceremony will be at the Ministry of Education and
\nCulture," the event's project officer, Carmelita Cajuman, said on
\nThursday.<\/p>\n
The university's rector, Thomas Suyatno, is scheduled to open
\nthe competition.<\/p>\n
Carmelita said the committee extended the scope of this year's
\nevent, sending invitations to universities outside the capital
\nand from other provinces to participate in the annual event.<\/p>\n
She said some universities decided to skip this year's
\ncompetition due to clashes in their respective provinces.<\/p>\n
"Acehnese students wrote that they could not join the
\ncompetition, while their counterparts in East Timor have not
\nresponded to our invitation," the competition's technical
\ncommittee officer, Avi Nababan, said.<\/p>\n
Similar to the first competition, hosted by the University of
\nIndonesia's English Debating Society last year, this year's
\ndebate will use the same Australian parliamentary debate format.<\/p>\n
Each debate will have two opposing teams and each team will
\nhave three members. Team members will be given seven minutes each
