'Universities must offer more technological science'<\/p>\n
BEKASI, West Java (JP): Minister of Education and Culture
\nWardiman Djojonegoro said Indonesian universities offer too much
\nsocial studies and not enough programs on technology and natural
\nsciences.<\/p>\n
During the induction ceremony of Prof. M. Dawam Rahardjo as
\nthe new rector of the \"45\" Islamic University (Unisma) on
\nSaturday, Wardiman said that 67 percent of state universities and
\n76 percent of private universities offered social studies.<\/p>\n
The remaining 33 percent of state universities and 24 percent
\nprivate universities provided programs on natural sciences and
\ntechnology. There are 51 state universities and 1,122 private
\nuniversities in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Wardiman said the government is considering reducing the
\nnumber of social studies programs and adding more natural
\nsciences and technology courses.<\/p>\n
He called on administrators of both private and state-run
\nuniversities to design their curriculum in accordance with their
\nown needs. He said that the universities also needed to improve
\ntheir programs on economic sciences so that they could produce
\ngraduates with better skills, who would be able to help the
\ncountry face increasingly stiff global competition.<\/p>\n
\"It's a fact that the quality of Indonesian workers is poorer
\nthan that of neighboring countries,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Wardiman explained that because natural resources were being
\nrapidly depleted while human needs were continuing to grow,
\nglobal competition would sharpen discrepancies between
\nunderdeveloped countries and those nations that had mastered
\nscience and technology.<\/p>\n
\"Only by developing human resources and mastering science and
\ntechnology can economic superiority be achieved,\" said Wardiman.<\/p>\n
Saturday's ceremony was also attended by Coordinating Minister
\nfor People's Welfare Azwar Anas and former minister of religious
\naffairs who now chairs of National Commission on Human Rights
