        "content": "<p>Unity toward election<\/p>\n<p>From Gatra<\/p>\n<p>A number of Jakarta newspapers reported recently on Megawati<br>\nSoekarnoputri's plan to submit her problems within her party, the<br>\nIndonesian Democratic Party (PDI), to the international court.<\/p>\n<p>I am disappointed at her decision. Involving the international<br>\ncourt in her case will bring a number of negative impacts on<br>\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n<p>a. The international community will evaluate that Indonesia's<br>\nlegal system is very bad because an Indonesian citizen chooses to<br>\npresent her problems at the international court.<\/p>\n<p>b. The problems faced by Megawati are connected with her forcible<br>\nremoval from the PDI chairmanship. A problem that should be an<br>\ninternal one within the party, will be known by international<br>\ncircles. It may give rise to a negative evaluation of the<br>\ndemocratic system of parties in Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>c. The international world will evaluate that Indonesia is not<br>\nyet able to solve various problems on its own country so it will<br>\ninfluence political, economic, social, cultural, defense and<br>\nsecurity matters of the Indonesian state.<br>\nd. The opinion, both here and abroad, that the laws in force in<br>\nIndonesia are no longer in accordance with the laws in<br>\ninternational circles because (possibly) they are replete with<br>\ncollusion, corruption and various forms of bribery, which result<br>\nin biased decisions.<\/p>\n<p>I strongly hope that Megawati is willing to:<\/p>\n<p>Postpone her plan to go to the international court. Megawati<br>\nhas strong charisma. If the decision by the international court<br>\nis not in her favor, it will harm her reputation as a prominent<br>\nfigure in society.<\/p>\n<p>Find peaceful ways to settle the conflict within the party. In<br>\nMay, we will have our general election. It would be a good thing<br>\nif before the election the problems within the PDI will have been<br>\nsolved so as not to disturb the election.<\/p>\n<p>Endeavor to coax her sympathizers to unite with Soerjadi<br>\nfollowers to make a success of the 1997 general election. What<br>\nwill become of the PDI if its sympathizers are divided into two<br>\ncamps? Certainly it will not gain a victory, it will rather<br>\nsuffer an absolute defeat.<\/p>\n<p>So, if Megawati still cares for the PDI, she should not see<br>\nher problems in an irrational light and try to mobilize forces to<br>\ndefeat Soerjadi.
