Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The United States (US) is said to be \u201cbeing\nkilled\u201d. The \u201ckiller\u201d is even a figure from within.<\/p>\n
This is at least contained in The Guardian\u2019s analysis on Sunday. The\nanalysis was written by US columnist Rebecca Solnit, who is also the\nauthor of the book \u201cThe Beginning Comes After the End: Notes on a World\nof Change\u201d.<\/p>\n
According to her, there is systemic weakening in the federal\ngovernment\u2019s body. This has the potential to drag in broad impacts on\nthe global economy.<\/p>\n
Initially, she mentions various crucial state functions that are\nunder pressure due to budget cuts and restructuring. From nuclear\nweapons oversight, cybersecurity, to counter-terrorism.<\/p>\n
This condition is seen as weakening the state\u2019s capacity to maintain\ndomestic and international stability. Not only that, public service\nsectors such as health, vaccination programmes, food security, and\nenvironmental protection are also said to be affected.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe federal government serving the public is being weakened, while\nbudget priorities shift to other sectors,\u201d the report writes, quoted on\nMonday (13\/4\/2026).<\/p>\n
The main spotlight is directed at policies from the Donald Trump era,\nwhich are seen as significantly changing the direction of state\nspending. Cuts to several social and environmental programmes are said\nto have occurred amid increases in defence and domestic security\nspending.<\/p>\n
Business figure Elon Musk is also mentioned in relation to efficiency\npolicies that impact US foreign aid agency USAID, when he was appointed\nas head of Trump\u2019s efficiency agency, the Department of Government\nEfficiency (DOGE), though he later stepped down. That move is seen as\nworsening humanitarian crises in several developing countries.<\/p>\n
At the same time, geopolitical tensions, including conflicts with\nIran, are exacerbating global economic pressures. Supply chain\ndisruptions, particularly for important commodities like fertiliser,\nrisk triggering food crises in various regions.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, changing import tariff policies are also said to create\nuncertainty for global business players. The business world is seen as\nstruggling to draw up long-term plans amid fluctuating policy\ndirections.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe US used to lead the world in scientific research, including\nmedical research, which has produced important breakthroughs in disease\ntreatment and health, but all that has been slashed to pieces. This is\nmurder,\u201d she asserts.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe consequences could last in the long term, including on the\neconomy and environment,\u201d the report writes.<\/p>\n
Finally, the report emphasises the importance of structural reforms\nin the US to restore trust and stability.
