Uniprep: The best pathway to an international education<\/p>\n
Australia creates a lot of interest among Indonesian students
\nwishing to continue with their higher education overseas. In the
\nland of the kangaroo, the number of students from Indonesia is
\nrapidly increasing year by year. And from the large number of
\nhigher-education institutions in Australia, The University of New
\nSouth Wales (UNSW) is the first choice for most.<\/p>\n
Since Uniprep was established in Jakarta in 1994, over 360
\nstudents have graduated, with 82 percent meeting Australian
\nuniversity entry requirements.<\/p>\n
Run by private university UniSadhuGuna in Jakarta, in
\npartnership with The University of New South Wales, Uniprep
\nconducts an identical university foundation program to that of
\nUniversity Foundation Year (UFY) in Sydney. All the lecturers are
\nexperienced Australian or British teachers with international
\nqualifications, and the program is monitored and assessed by UNSW
\nwith all examinations set and marked in Sydney.<\/p>\n
Uniprep Director John Olney said, "Indonesian and
\ninternational students are receiving the same high quality
\nuniversity preparation as they would receive in Australia.
\nFurthermore, the teaching style at Uniprep encourages students to
\nthink critically and develop self-discipline, skills they will
\nneed when studying at university level overseas."<\/p>\n
Uniprep has four streams of study -- Commerce, Arts, Design
\nand Science -- leading to any Australian university course. "We
\nare the only foundation course in Jakarta offering this diversity
\nof course choice," Olney pointed out. The most popular university
\nchoice upon leaving Uniprep is the prestigious UNSW. However,
\nUniprep students have also been accepted into 17 other Australian
\nuniversities, including Monash and Melbourne universities.<\/p>\n
In 1999, Uniprep launched the first university-preparation
\nDesign stream in Jakarta, with all nine students in the group
\ngaining places in the best Design faculties in Australia at UNSW,
\nMonash and RMIT, taking courses in Media and Communications,
\nMultimedia, Design and Electronic Publishing.<\/p>\n
The majority of students coming into Uniprep are from third
\nyear of Indonesian Senior High School (SMU). It is expected that
\nover 80 students will enroll in June this year. This Uniprep
\nintake offers a six-month time saving compared to taking
\nfoundation in Australia. "Students can enter Uniprep as soon as
\nthey finish senior high school in June, and they are then ready
\nto start university in Australia in February 2001. If they went
\nto Sydney or Melbourne to do Foundation Studies they would start
\nuniversity one semester later," Olney said. Uniprep also has a
\nregular September intake for SMU students, where they will follow
\nthe same timetable as in Sydney, finishing in time to enter
\nuniversity in July 2001.<\/p>\n
Uniprep also conducts a special intensive fast-track course
\nfor students who have taken "O" levels or Year 11 in Singapore,
\nMalaysia or Australia. "This year's intake, which started in
\nJanuary, gives students the opportunity to enter university six
\nmonths earlier than their peers," said Olney.<\/p>\n
Another intensive course is scheduled to begin in the second
\nweek of December 2000. The course will finish in early June next
\nyear, enabling students to enroll in university in Australia in
\nJuly 2001.<\/p>\n
Besides offering a quality university preparation program that
\nenables students to fast track their entry into the best overseas
\nuniversities, Uniprep has another big advantage. Students
\ncontinue to live at home in Jakarta for the duration of the
\nUniprep program, which means a saving on expensive overseas
\nliving costs.<\/p>\n
Uniprep students also benefit from smaller class sizes. "The
\ncourses are the same as those in Australia, but there is more
\npersonalized attention here," Olney said.<\/p>\n
Uniprep now has over 70 alumni who have completed their first
\ndegree. Some are continuing with Honors or Masters degrees. These
\nalumni also praise the program for preparing them for the
\nchallenges of university life. "Uniprep was a big help," said one
\ngraduate now completing a Commerce degree at UNSW. "While many
\nforeign students feel confused when they start their university
\ncourse, Uniprep has taught us how to listen and take notes in
\nlectures and how to make good use of tutorials and to approach
\ntutors and lecturers for assistance."<\/p>\n
