        "content": "<p>Union irked by Korpri statement<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA: The Indonesian Prosperous Labor Union (SBSI) has<br>\ndenounced the statement of the chairman of the civil servants'<br>\norganization (Korpri) that members who quit Korpri would no<br>\nlonger be in public service.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement made available to The Jakarta Post on Tuesday,<br>\nSBSI chief Muchtar Pakpahan said the chairman, Feisal Tamin,<br>\nclearly showed a lack of understanding of international<br>\nconventions on freedom of association.<\/p>\n<p>Feisal made the remark in response to the announcement of<br>\nMinister of Information Muhammad Yunus that the Korpri unit at<br>\nhis ministry was being disbanded based on members' agreement that<br>\nit served no purpose.<\/p>\n<p>In the past observers said the main use of Korpri was to<br>\nensure votes for Golkar from civil servants.<\/p>\n<p>Muchtar, who was jailed during the New Order regime, reminded<br>\nFeisal that Indonesia is a member of The World Confederation of<br>\nLabor. He charged Feisal's remark was in violation of a<br>\nconvention of the International Labor Organization<br>\nstating that the government should refrain from intervention in<br>\nfreedom of association.<\/p>",
