        "content": "<p>Union executives testified<\/p>\n<p>MEDAN, North Sumatra: Two local executives of the SBSI rebel<br>\nunion testified against their chairman Muchtar Pakpahan, saying<br>\nthat he sent circulars from Jakarta calling for a general strike.<\/p>\n<p>Hayati, treasurer of SBSI Medan, said in the trial against<br>\nMuchtar that the circular was sent by registered mail and then<br>\nthe local SBSI office made copies of it for distribution to<br>\nworkers in Medan, the Antara news agency reported.<\/p>\n<p>Fatiwanolo Zega, vice secretary of Medan SBSI, in a separate<br>\ntestimony also said that Muchtar had once urged for a general<br>\nstrike but pointed out that it was within their rights and the<br>\nbest way for workers to express their demands.<\/p>\n<p>Muchtar is being tried in connection with the workers&apos; April<br>\nriot which left one businessman dead and dozens of factories<br>\ndamaged. The government prosecutors have charged Muchtar with<br>\ninciting workers to commit violence. (emb)<\/p>",
