Unicef to send medical aid to Papua<\/p>\n
JAYAPURA, Papua: The United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef)
\nwill provide medical equipment for health clinics and public
\nhealth centers in Papua, as well as organizing health seminars
\nfor locals.<\/p>\n
The aid comes after studies found that the health of mothers
\nand children in the province is the worst in the country.<\/p>\n
The head of Unicef's country representative office, Steven
\nAllen, said over the weekend that every year at least 5,000 of
\nabout 60,000 newborns in Papua died before they reached the age
\nof one, and 7,000 before the age of five.<\/p>\n
According to Allen, most children in Papua, the country's
\neasternmost province, died of malaria and respiratory diseases.<\/p>\n
Allen based his statements on his office's studies in
\nJayapura, Biak Numfor, Sorong and Manokwawri regencies.<\/p>\n
He did not reveal the total value of the assistance to be
\ngiven to Papua health clinics and public health centers, or when
\nhis office would begin organizing health seminars for the locals.

NSK to review fellowship program<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The Japanese Newspapers and Publishers Association
\n(NSK) is planning to review its fellowship program for foreign
\njournalists, including journalists from the Association of
\nSoutheast Asian Nations (ASEAN), an NSK spokesman said.<\/p>\n
NSK international manager Ryuta Araki told a gathering here on
\nSaturday that Japan was still in the grip of economic crisis.<\/p>\n
Responding to Araki's statement, Indonesian Journalists
\nAssociation chairman Tarman Azam said the fellowship program
\nshould not only be maintained for the benefit of both parties,
\nbut should be upgraded by inviting senior editors to take part.<\/p>\n
The NSK fellowship program has run for the past 25 years.
\nEvery year, foreign journalists are invited to Japan to study
\nthat country's culture and are accommodated through a homestay
\nsystem.<\/p>\n
ASEAN comprises Indonesia, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia,
\nMyanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Fire in chemical plant continues<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Firefighters continued to struggle on Sunday to
\ncontain a fire raging in a chemical storage plant in the
\nindustrial town of Serang, Banten, western Java, officials said.<\/p>\n
One man has been severely injured in the fire, which erupted
\nwhen a tanker was being filled on Saturday at the PT Santafe
\nplant.<\/p>\n
\"We are still working around the clock to extinguish the fire
\nat the Santafe chemical storage plant,\" a member of the Serang
\nfire brigade said.<\/p>\n
He said six fire engines were at the site of the blaze, which
\nbroke out at about 9 a.m. on Saturday.<\/p>\n
The fire quickly spread to 10 storage tanks, while firemen
\nsucceeded in isolating three other tanks that contain
\nbutilacetate, a raw material used in the production of plastic
\npellets.<\/p>\n

Firefighters demand basics<\/p>\n
BANDUNG, West Java: An official with the Fire Department in
\nTumpal Sirait revealed on Saturday that his department was in
\nurgent need of at least nine command posts and hydrants to
\nimprove performance.<\/p>\n
He said the hydrants would help firefighters deal with
\nemergencies following an increase in the number of buildings in
\nthe city.<\/p>\n
Tumpal added that his office had proposed the construction of
\ncommand posts and hydrants in nine places in the city, including
\nthe Asia Afrika-Ahmad Yani crossroads, Jalan Rajawali, Jalan
\nSukajadi, Ujungberung, Tegallega, Soekarno Hatta, Kiaracondong,
\nthe city square and Caringin.<\/p>\n
He said that the command posts would cost Rp 4 billion
\n(US$430,000) each including land acquisition, construction and

WB to build 16 schools in Maluku<\/p>\n
TUAL, Maluku: Southeast Maluku is to get 16 elementary school
\nbuildings to help school children in that area receive a basic
\neducation.<\/p>\n
Education office head Ali Rahayaan said the school
\nconstruction program was important as many school buildings were
\nfalling down.<\/p>\n
Construction will be funded by the World Bank through its
\nbasic education improvement project.<\/p>\n
Ali said that his office planned to build school facilities in
\neight districts.<\/p>\n
Since last year, the WB has been prioritizing the development
\nof 11 school buildings in Southeast Maluku and West Southeast
\nMaluku. The project will cost Rp 2.63 billion (US$215,000). -

Amusement centers to close for Ramadhan<\/p>\n
SURABAYA, East Java: Provincial Police chief Insp. Gen.
\nSutanto expressed his readiness to uphold restrictions on
\namusement centers during the fasting month of Ramadhan.<\/p>\n
The restriction was issued by the local administration and has
\nbeen disseminated to the public.<\/p>\n
The police vowed to take stern action against those violating
\nthe local decree, saying that the administration would have the
\nauthority to revoke licenses.<\/p>\n
Earlier, the Surabaya chapter of the Nahdlatul Ulama Muslim
\norganization had demanded that the city administration force

Severe deforestation in Mataram<\/p>\n
MATARAM, West Nusa Tenggara: Local councillors on Saturday
\nexpressed worries about severe deforestation in the area, which
\nis mainly caused by residents taking an increasing volume of logs
\nfor firewood.<\/p>\n
\"If this issue continues to be ignored, the forest in Central
\nLombok will disappear,\" said councillor Taqiuddin Mansur. Local
\npeople take the wood not only for cooking, but also for the
\nlimestone industry.<\/p>\n
Taqiuddin urged the local administration to take preventative
\naction. \"Limestone baking takes place in the villages of Mangkung
\nand Bonder, which produce approximately 20 tons per day,\" he
\nadded.<\/p>\n
Governor Harun Al Rasyid disclosed that local people usually

Free rice in dry season<\/p>\n
GORONTALO: The Gorontalo provincial administration has
\nprepared 61 tons of rice for distribution to needy families in
\nanticipation of a severe drought.<\/p>\n
The administration's secretary, David Bobihoe, said on
\nSaturday that the rice would be distributed to villages in both
\ncoastal and mountain areas.<\/p>\n
He added that the administration had distributed 15 tons of
\nrice and the remaining 46 tons would be distributed to 231
\nvillages just before the Islamic fasting month of Ramadhan.<\/p>\n
\"Twenty families from each village will receive 10 kilograms
\neach,\" David added.<\/p>\n
He said that the village chiefs would help with the
\ndistribution so that the aid supplied under the Food-for-the-Poor

Batam police find marijuana<\/p>\n
BATAM, Riau: Security personnel in Barelang on Saturday found
\nthree kilograms of marijuana in Sekupang Port but failed to
\nidentify the owner.<\/p>\n
Police officials confirmed that the marijuana was wrapped in
\nnewspaper and plastic and speculated that the marijuana was owned
\nby a passenger on a ship which plies the Dumai-Batam route.<\/p>\n
The owner apparently discarded the bag after realizing that
\nsecurity personnel were screening luggage with X-Ray devices.<\/p>\n
Local police are continuing their investigation. Within the
\nlast year the Batam police have confiscated 500 kilograms of
