UNESCO opens week-long meeting<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Members of the United Nations Educational, Scientific
\nand Cultural Organization (UNESCO) started their week-long
\nmeeting on Monday to draft its medium term strategy for the Asia
\nPacific region for the next six years.<\/p>\n
Executive chairman of the Indonesian National Commission for
\nUNESCO Arief Rachman said on Monday that the meeting would also
\ndiscuss the challenge of reducing poverty through education for
\nall, applying science toward building a knowledge-based society,
\nand removing social, cultural and communication barriers.<\/p>\n
Other key issues include coping with globalization through
\nbuilding cultural and education bridges between people, applying
\ninformation technology to the benefit not only of the rich but
\nalso those who are excluded, achieving sustainable development
\nand education on how to prevent the spread of AIDS.<\/p>\n
The meeting will also address the root causes of conflict in
\norder to build a culture of peace through a region that has been
\nbedeviled by a number of threats to both external and internal
