UNESCAP to discuss rural prosperity<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for
\nAsia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) and the Center for Alleviation of
\nPoverty Through Secondary Crop Development (CAPSA) will organize
\na regional workshop on rural prosperity and secondary crops.<\/p>\n
The focus of the workshop will be on applied pro-poor
\nresearch and policies.<\/p>\n
The four-day workshop, which starts on Tuesday in Bogor, is
\naimed at educating people about research and policies to
\ncontribute to prosperity among rural poor populations, the UN
\nInformation Center said in a media statement last week.<\/p>\n
Fourteen Asian and Pacific countries, including Indonesia, and
\nseven regional\/international organizations, will participate in
\nthe workshop, which is also jointly-organized by the governments
\nof Indonesia and Japan.<\/p>\n
"Asia and the Pacific still have 900 million extremely poor
\nrural people. Of these, at least 375 million live in dry uplands
\nwhere secondary crops provide sources for subsistence and
\nlivelihood. Still, little research or policy attention is given
\nto these crops, in spite of their importance for poor rural
\npopulations," UNIC said in the statement.<\/p>\n
The workshops will be held at the UNCAPSA Building on Jl.
\nMerdeka 145 in Bogor. -- JP<\/p>",
