UNDP to aid soybean seed project<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The United Nations Development Program (UNDP)
\nyesterday signed an agreement on the provision of US$981,825 in
\ngrants for the improvement of Indonesia's soybean seed production
\nand marketing in some provinces.<\/p>\n
The agreement was signed by Fritz H. Loebus, UNDP's acting
\nresident representative, Secretary General of the Ministry of
\nAgriculture Soetatwo Hadiwigeno and Director General of Food
\nCrops and Horticulture Amrin Kahar.<\/p>\n
Loebus said the project, which is also intended to support
\nIndonesia's poverty alleviation program, will include a
\nfeasibility study for long term soybean seed development as a
\nmeans of supporting the soybean industry as well as promoting
\nfarmers' incomes.<\/p>\n
The study will be carried out in South Sulawesi, West Sumatra,
\nCentral Java and Yogyakarta.<\/p>\n
The project will also help formulate a short term seed program
\naimed at enhancing the private sector's potential to produce 440
\ntons of seed.<\/p>\n
The project also includes the establishment of a distinctness,
\nuniformity and stability testing facility, operation of seed
\nhealth testing of soybeans and the training of personnel in the
\nfields.<\/p>\n
The UNDP said that the Indonesian government is committed to
\nproviding some Rp 1.05 billion ($485,490) for the project. (fhp)<\/p>",
