How should one understand this precious advice from the Prophet\nMuhammad (peace be upon him)? Imam Bukhari narrated in his Sahih\ncollection from Anas bin Malik that the Prophet said: \u201cAllah the\nAlmighty said: If I test My servant by taking away his two beloved\nthings\u2014meaning his two eyes\u2014and he remains patient, I will compensate\nhim with Paradise in their place.\u201d<\/p>\n
For this reason, when righteous people lost their sight, they would\nsay, \u201cO Allah, replace this loss with a reward from You.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ibn Abbas once lost both his eyes. When those who disliked him came\nto console him, while those who loved him came to express their sorrow,\nhe said: \u201cIf Allah has taken the light from my two eyes, He has still\ngranted light in my heart and my mind. My heart remains sharp and my\nthoughts remain clear, while my tongue is as keen as a drawn sword.\u201d<\/p>\n
Likewise, Yazid bin Harun, a devoted worshipper and scholar of\nhadith, suffered blindness in both eyes. When asked, \u201cWhere have your\nbeautiful eyes gone?\u201d he replied, \u201cThey were lost through weeping in the\npre-dawn hours. And their reward lies with Allah.\u201d<\/p>\n
This is the conviction a believer must hold: whatever is lost through\nAllah\u2019s trial should never make him forget that Allah\u2019s reward is far\ngreater.<\/p>\n
