This zoonotic disease\u2014an\ninfection transmitted from animals to humans\u2014has drawn serious attention\nfollowing a rise in cases in neighbouring Malaysia, and the detection of\ncases in Indonesia in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>IDAI Tropic Diseases Infection Control Task Force member Inke Nadia\nDiniyanti Lubis explains that the disease is caused by the parasite\nPlasmodium knowlesi. Unlike other malaria types, this parasite has a\nvery short life cycle, enabling it to reproduce rapidly inside the human\nbody.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMalaria from monkeys can cause severe symptoms due to its much\nshorter life cycle. They reproduce very quickly within the human body,\u201d\nDr.\u00a0Inke said in a recent online discussion.<\/p>\n<p>The parasite Plasmodium knowlesi originally infects primates,\nespecially long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis) and pig-tailed\nmacaques (Macaca nemestrina). Transmission to humans occurs through\nbites by Anopheles mosquitoes of the leucosphyrus group.<\/p>\n<p>The disease is generally found in communities living in or near\nforested areas. Dr.\u00a0Inke notes that increases in case numbers are often\nclosely linked to deforestation or changes in land use from forest to\nplantations and settlements. This disrupts the habitat of monkeys and\nmosquitoes, leading to more intense human contact with the transmission\nfactors.<\/p>\n<p>By epidemiological week 16 of 2026, Malaysia reported an outbreak in\nSabah with a total of 357 human cases and one death.
