Understanding handwriting for better relationships<\/p>\n

JAKARTA (JP): Your handwriting, graphologist Ness Shirley
\nasserts, illustrates your personality.<\/p>\n
A disconnected horizontal bar of a \"t\" reveals impatience,
\nsmall characters show modesty and a downward line indicates
\ndiscouragement. A small left margin reveals a clinging to the
\npast, while a tendency to leave a large gap at the top of a page
\nshows a great respect for authority.<\/p>\n
Before rushing off to practice and reflect on your handwriting
\nin this age of the laptop, Shirley says that handwriting doesn't
\nchange much due to lack of practice.<\/p>\n
\"A change in handwriting reflects a change in personality,\"
\nshe explained while using her own daughters as examples. \"My
\neldest has got bigger handwriting now.\" Shirley said this
\nreflects her daughter's jump in self confidence after entering
\nthe business world.<\/p>\n
Shirley, from Scotland in Great Britain, is a graphologist.
\nGraphology, according to The World Book Encyclopedia, is the
\nstudy of a person's handwriting to gain information of his or her
\npersonality.<\/p>\n
Shirley said she studied the science 12 years ago at The
\nSchool of Graphology in Brussels, Belgium.<\/p>\n
Managers in Belgium and France place high importance on
\nhandwriting when recruiting employees. They look to see if the
\nperspective employee has a sense of autonomy and cooperation.<\/p>\n
\"Old companies look for tradition and conventionality in
\nrecruits,\" said Shirley, whose services are often requested by
\nmanagers.<\/p>\n
But she quickly warned that employees should not be afraid of
\ngetting the sack because of their handwriting.<\/p>\n
\"When you gain understanding of a person it's very good for
\nbetter communication,\" said Shirley, who added that she
\nspecializes is stroke analysis.<\/p>\n
Shirley was talking to a crowd last week at the pen display in
\nthe Atrium at Plaza Indonesia.<\/p>\n
When her contract with the Mont Blanc pen company ends, she is
\nscheduled to hold a one-day introduction to graphology here in
\nMarch.<\/p>\n
Handwriting, she continued, also reflects our \"coping
\nmechanisms\". It discloses a person prone to telling little white
\nlies as well as those who are good and those who are hostile when
\ncoping with their surroundings. It uncovers a person with a chip
\non their shoulder and a person who can't say no.<\/p>\n
But Shirley knows the limits of her skills. She said she would
\nhave to learn about other scripts, like Chinese, before being
\nable to study all handwriting.<\/p>\n
An immediate challenge came from none other than Mrs. Maud
\nGirard, who teaches Chinese archeology in a number of
\ninstitutions in France and is the wife of French ambassador
\nDominique Girard.<\/p>\n
\"It's a Taoist phrase,\" said Mrs. Girard, explaining what she
\nwrote, after refusing to be cajoled into writing Latin script.<\/p>\n
\"I would have to learn how people of the culture were brought
\nup to write, regarding pressure, slant and size for instance,\"
\nexplained Shirley.<\/p>\n
\"Psychology helps in studying handwriting, but a graphologist
\nmust not pretend to be a psychologist,\" she added.<\/p>\n
Where is the line then?<\/p>\n
The World Book Encyclopedia states that many scientists
\nregard graphology as a pseudo-science because many of its claims
\nlack scientific evidence. Psychologists, however, consider the
\nstudy a useful diagnostic tool.<\/p>\n
