Underground map vital for subway project: Surjadi<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Governor Surjadi Soedirdja wants the
\nadministration to develop an underground map of the capital
\nbefore subterranean development projects begin.<\/p>\n
Once the planned subway project and underground shopping
\ncenters are completed, Jakarta would have an underground city, he
\nsaid yesterday.<\/p>\n
\"So, underground mapping is badly needed by the city to
\nprepare the necessary regulations, to anticipate underground
\ndevelopments and to prevent further conflicts in the future,\"
\nSurjadi said after a meeting at City Hall.<\/p>\n
Poor planning of underground projects could cause serious
\nproblems because such areas will play an important role in the
\nfuture due to the scarcity of land on which to build, he said.<\/p>\n
Other big cities overseas, such as Singapore, have already
\ndeveloped below ground level, for mass rapid transportation
\nnetworks and shopping centers, he said.<\/p>\n
\"The efforts have been made due to the limited land available
\non the surface,\" Surjadi said.<\/p>\n
According to the head of the city's Mapping and Land
\nMeasurement Agency, Mochammad Sidarta, underground mapping is an
\nimportant way to identify the geology of the land before
\nbeginning construction.<\/p>\n
\"Based on underground mapping, the administration can
\ndetermine kind of projects should be allowed in which areas,\"
\nSidarta said.<\/p>\n
He, therefore, urged the administration to complete the city's
\nunderground mapping before starting the construction of the
\nproposed US$2.3 billion subway.<\/p>\n
\"With underground mapping, we'll find out whether the planned
\nroutes for the subway project are possible to construct,\" Sidarta
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The project is scheduled to run from Blok M shopping area in
\nthe south to Kota railway station in the north, passing streets
\nwhich are home to dozens of skyscrapers.<\/p>\n
Deputy Governor of Economic and Development Affairs Tb.M. Rais
\nsaid Thursday that underground mapping could also be used to
\npreserve the city's groundwater and reduce the use of deep and
\nartesian wells.<\/p>\n
\"Uncontrolled use of artesian and deep wells could leave holes
\nin the ground which would eventually lead to salt water
\nintrusion.\"<\/p>\n
He said that the administration had asked government
\ntopographers to form a team to collect information and data to
\ndetermine which areas' artesian wells might soon run dry.<\/p>\n
\"The city should start controlling the use of groundwater to
\nprotect the environment,\" Rais said.<\/p>\n
Once the underground mapping completed, he said, the city was
\nalso planning to conduct a sea map, starting with Jakarta bay.<\/p>\n
Data from the city's mining agency shows that one third of the
\ncity's groundwater, particularly in North Jakarta, is of the
\npoorest quality.<\/p>\n
Areas in which water quality is particularly low include
\nCilincing, Kapuk, Muara Karang, Sunter, Tanjung Priok, Kelapa
\nGading -- all in North Jakarta; Gambir, Jatinegara, Karet,
\nMatraman, Petamburan, Senen, Tanah Abang -- in Central Jakarta,
\nand Pulogadung and Cakung in East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
These areas need 250 injection wells, which could help
\nreplenish groundwater, and 30,000 ground wells. (ste\/07)<\/p>",
