A case of alleged verbal sexual harassment involving more than a\ndozen students at the Faculty of Law, Universitas Indonesia (FH UI), has\ndrawn attention from foreign media.<\/p>\n
Singapore\u2019s The Straits Times, in its report on Thursday 16 April\n2026, highlighted how conversations involving 16 UI law students\nrecently went viral, triggering public condemnation and fresh concerns\nabout the spread of sexual violence on campus.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe conversation laden with vulgar language among 16 UI law students\nrecently went viral and sparked public outrage as well as new concerns\nabout the proliferation of sexual violence on campus,\u201d the media\nstated.<\/p>\n
The coverage also revealed that the case stemmed from a post on the X\nplatform on 12 April 2026 showing screenshots of the student group chat.\nThe content included vulgar comments, explicit sexual jokes, and\nobjectification of female students and lecturers.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat post quickly went viral and attracted widespread attention,\nprompting other students to hold a forum on 13 April at the Depok\ncampus,\u201d the report continued. In the forum, students demanded apologies\nfrom the alleged perpetrators, some of whom are known to be student\norganisation officials.<\/p>\n
According to the media report, the university has initiated an\ninternal investigation through a task force for preventing and handling\nsexual violence. Additionally, several students have had their\nmemberships revoked from campus organisations.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe university also stated that it would not rule out coordinating\nwith law enforcement,\u201d wrote The Straits Times, indicating the potential\nfor reporting the case to the police if criminal elements are found.<\/p>\n
Spotlight also came from ABC News, which reported the case on\nWednesday 15 April 2026. In its coverage, the Australian media\nhighlighted the number of reported victims and demands for strict\nsanctions against the perpetrators.<\/p>\n
\u201cAccording to local media, the number of reported victims so far is\n27 people, consisting of 20 FH UI students and seven lecturers,\u201d wrote\nABC News. The report also emphasised calls from survivors for heavy\nsanctions against the perpetrators, including the possibility of\nexpulsion from campus.<\/p>\n
More broadly, the foreign media assessed this case as reflecting a\nlarger problem, namely concerns over the normalisation of sexual\nharassment in Indonesia\u2019s higher education environment.
