State Minister of State Enterprises Sugiharto finally disclosed
\non Thursday 16 state enterprises allegedly riddled with
\ncorruption, following demands from lawmakers who wanted to make
\nthe allegation widely known.<\/p>\n
During a hearing with House of Representatives Commission VI
\nfor trade, industry and state enterprises, Sugiharto said he had
\nsubmitted the report on the allegation to President Susilo
\nBambang Yudhoyono recently.<\/p>\n
The state minister said the graft included procurement
\nkickbacks, unfair and opaque bidding processes, manipulation of
\nfinancial reports and illegal fees.<\/p>\n
The allegations are based on an internal investigation
\nconducted by the Office of the State Minister of State
\nEnterprises using the companies financial reports as well as
\naudit reports from the Supreme Audit Agency and the State
\nDevelopment Comptroller.<\/p>\n
The disclosure bolstered Susilo's campaign to combat
\ncorruption. State enterprises have long served as cash cows for
\nunscrupulous officials as well as for organizations and political
\nparties.<\/p>\n
By maximizing state enterprises' performance, the government
\nexpects to reap more proceeds to help plug the widening state
\nbudget deficit due to the fuel subsidy.<\/p>\n
Commission VI member Nusron Wahid said the government should
\nidentify what drove the losses and graft in the companies in
\norder to be able to take the necessary steps in the future to
\naddress the problems.<\/p>\n
\"We should identify the root of the problem. If it's
\nmismanagement, the option is restructuring the management. If
\nit's not, another options could be privatizing the firms,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
