Uncertified airport cabbies caught<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): At least 62 taxi drivers operating at the
\nSoekarno-Hatta International Airport without accreditation were
\narrested on Wednesday for allegedly extorting money from
\nIndonesian workers returning from overseas.<\/p>\n
Lt. Col. Pudji Hartanto Iskandar, Tangerang Police Precinct
\nchief, told Antara the crackdown came following numerous
\ncomplaints about extortion ploys of either charging passengers
\nexorbitant rates or directly demanding additional money.<\/p>\n
"The operation of the illegal taxi drivers at the arrival
\nterminals has far exceeded the tolerable level as they frighten
\nnot only the workers and passengers coming home from abroad, but
\nalso foreign tourists," Pudji said.<\/p>\n
Drivers were required to sign a statement declaring that they
\nwould no longer illegally operate at the airport and allowing the
\nauthorities to impound their vehicles for 10 hours, he added.<\/p>\n
By signing the statement, the drivers acknowledged they could
\nbe prosecuted for tarnishing the country's image for foreign
\ntourists and foreigners intending to do business in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
The police also arrested 22 uncertified porters and 34 people
\nwho operated their private cars as taxis. (hhr)<\/p>",
