UN soldier's murder unsolved<\/p>\n
KUPANG, East Nusa Tenggara: The investigation into the killing
\nof a New Zealand-born UN peacekeeper by an East Timorese
\nmilitiaman last year is hanging in the balance due to a lack of
\nadditional evidence, an official said on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Robert Tacoy, a spokesman for the East Nusa Tenggara
\nprovincial prosecutor's office, said the prosecutors had written
\nto the UN Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET),
\nasking for the return of the automatic rifle believed to have
\nbeen used to shoot the UN soldier, Leonard Maning, the postmortem
\nreport on the victim and the attendance of two of Maning's
\ncomrades in Kupang to give testimony.<\/p>\n
\"Without the evidence, we cannot proceed with the
\ninvestigation,\" Robert said.<\/p>\n
UNTAET had questioned the prospects for the investigation
\nafter the suspect, Yacobus Bere, surrendered to Belu Police on
\nJan. 15 after six months on the run.<\/p>\n
Later, Indonesian Army troops discovered during a weapons
\nsearch the rifle that had killed Maning and returned it to the UN
\npeacekeeping force. The weapon belonged to Maning, who was on
\nborder patrol in Suai when a group of pro-Jakarta militiamen
