Amidst a wave of regression in the struggle for gender equality,\npressure is mounting to appoint the next UN Secretary-General as the\nfirst woman in more as than 80 years of UN history.<\/p>\n
This contradiction has not escaped the notice of UN Women, the agency\nthat works tirelessly to promote the rights of women and girls, while\nsimultaneously pushing for women to occupy top positions in\ninternational organisations, governments, business, technology, and the\nincreasingly intense debates surrounding artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n
According to the agency\u2019s latest \u2018gender snapshot\u2019 report, at the\ncurrent rate of progress, it will take another 171 years to achieve\ngender equality\u2014a UN target originally set for 2015 and later moved to\n2030. Other findings are equally grim: nearly one in three women\nworldwide has experienced sexual violence, and almost one in five girls\nis married before the age of 18. Furthermore, at the current pace of the\nlast five years, gender equality in parliaments will not be achieved\nuntil 2089.<\/p>\n
After years of progress, female political leadership is now losing\nmomentum, with six out of seven countries still led by men.<\/p>\n
