        "content": "<p>Moscow (ANTARA) - United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres\nwill visit Cyprus at the end of July to advance negotiations on\nreunifying the island.<\/p>\n<p>The visit will mark the first trip by a UN Secretary-General to the\ncountry in 16 years, the newspaper Politis reported on Thursday (16\nJuly), citing diplomatic sources.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, the Cypriot Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed\ndisappointment over the UN\u2019s neutral stance regarding the island\u2019s\ndivision into Turkish and Greek zones.<\/p>\n<p>The last UN Secretary-General to visit Cyprus was Ban Ki-moon, who\nmade an official visit to the island in January 2010.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, Guterres is scheduled to hold a joint\nmeeting with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot\nleader Tufan Erhurman on 29 July.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting will be followed by a joint press conference, at which\nseveral important statements on the Cyprus issue are expected to be\nannounced.<\/p>\n<p>During the visit, Guterres will be accompanied by UN\nUnder-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix and UN\nUnder-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary\nDiCarlo.<\/p>\n<p>Cyprus has been de facto divided between the Greek and Turkish\ncommunities since 1974.<\/p>\n<p>This followed an armed invasion by Turkey, triggered by a coup in\nCyprus and an attempt to annex the island to Greece.<\/p>\n<p>Some 37 per cent of the island\u2019s territory was occupied, and it later\nbecame the site where the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) was\nproclaimed in 1983.<\/p>\n<p>To this day, Turkey remains the only country that recognises the\nsovereignty of the TRNC.<\/p>\n<p>UN-mediated talks between the Greek and Turkish communities on\nreunifying Cyprus stalled after the failure of the negotiating round\nheld in the Swiss town of Crans-Montana in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>At present, various parties are working to resume those\nnegotiations.<\/p>",
