        "content": "<p>The United Nations humanitarian agency has warned that overcrowding\nand poor sanitation in displacement camps in the Democratic Republic of\nCongo are increasing the risk of Ebola transmission. The UN Office for\nthe Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said more than 270,000\npeople, mostly women and children, are sheltering in over 60 sites\nacross Ituri Province, many of which lack adequate access to water,\nsanitation, and health services. OCHA stated the UN has received reports\nfrom local partners that between Wednesday and Thursday, at least 13\npeople died in two camps in Bunia, the provincial capital. Emergency\nresponse teams are urgently investigating whether these deaths are\nlinked to Ebola. Since April, at least 62 deaths have been reported in\ncamps around the city. \u201cThese deaths occur amid a wider Ebola outbreak\nin Bunia, where distrust of health facilities, population density, gaps\nin prevention measures, and unsafe handling of bodies are driving\ntransmission risks among camp residents,\u201d OCHA said. \u201cThis is extremely\nworrying because Ituri Province remains the epicentre of the outbreak,\naccounting for more than 90 per cent of confirmed cases.\u201d OCHA said that\nas of Wednesday, local authorities had reported 896 confirmed Ebola\ncases in Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu. OCHA is working with\npartners and local authorities to strengthen community engagement and\nscale up health and sanitation efforts in the camps, but current\nmeasures remain inadequate given the scale of needs. \u201cThis Ebola\noutbreak is occurring amid a broader humanitarian crisis,\u201d OCHA said,\nadding that the 2026 humanitarian response plan, requiring 1.4 billion\nUS dollars, seeks to address the full spectrum of humanitarian needs,\nincluding food security, protection, water and sanitation, health\nservices, and education, for 7.3 million of the most vulnerable\nCongolese. However, the funding appeal is only just over half funded,\nOCHA said.<\/p>",
