Un-leaded fuel product hiked<\/p>\n
BANDUNG (JP): Greater environmental awareness and continued
\nanti-pollution campaigns have prompted an increasing demand for
\nunleaded fuel which already exceeds the current production level
\nof state-owned gas and oil company Pertamina.<\/p>\n
Company officials are so hopeful of the continuing trend that
\nthey anticipate an end in the demand of premium leaded fuel by
\n2003.<\/p>\n
Speaking at a seminar on ozone here on Saturday, organized by
\nthe National Institute of Technology, Zainal Abidin Thamrin, who
\nis in charge of PT Pertamina's product control, said that this
\nyear alone demand for unleaded fuel is expected to reach 7.7
\nmillion kiloliters while only 6.6 million kiloliters of Ron 92
\nunleaded gasoline is scheduled to be produced.<\/p>\n
Zainal said due to increasing trend in demand, in the future
\nthey will produce Ron 88 Premium Unleaded to replace the current
\npremium leaded fuel.<\/p>\n
To replace Premix, Pertamina plans to produce Ron 95 Super
\nUnleaded which has a higher octane level.<\/p>\n
\"We hope that eventually in 2003 demand for premium (leaded)
\ngasoline will be at zero,\" he explained.<\/p>\n
\"It will be replaced by unleaded gasoline Ron 88 Premium
\nUnleaded of which we will produce 5.3 million kiloliters,\" he
\nsaid estimating that the total amount of unleaded fuel produced
\nwill be around 11.2 million.<\/p>\n
Zainal revealed that preparations were already being made for
\nPremium Unleaded to be produced in all Pertamina refineries
\nacross the country while Super Unleaded will be produced in the
\nBalongan refinery.<\/p>\n
According to Zainal, estimates indicate that between 1999 and
\n2004 there will be an oversupply for Premium Unleaded, while on
\nthe other hand Pertamina's production of Super Unleaded can only
\nsupply about 73 percent of demand.<\/p>\n
As a short term solution, Pertamina is calling on consumers to
\nuse Premium Unleaded to satisfy the demand for the higher octane
\nunleaded fuel.<\/p>\n
\"However as of 2004 and onwards such a substitution method
\nwill not meet the total (unleaded) gasoline demand,\" Zainal
\nremarked pointing out that Pertamina must increase the output of
\nits' refineries along with imports.<\/p>\n
\"We hope with the sale of the Ron 88 and Ron 95 unleaded
\ngasoline, the Blue Sky (environmental) program will be fruitful
\nas the combustion in the car's engine is cleaner and discharges
\nless harmful gases,\" said Zainal.(25\/sur)<\/p>",
