UN issues resolution on Bali bomb probe<\/p>\n

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) strongly condemned on
\nMonday the Bali attacks and urged the international community to
\nwork together and help Indonesia see that justice was done and
\nthe perpetrators punished swiftly.<\/p>\n
Reaffirming the need to combat terrorist in accordance with
\nresolution 1373 (2001) enacted on Sept. 28, 2001 which deals with
\nterrorism, the Council unanimously and swiftly adopted Resolution
\n1438 which essentially calls for the Indonesian government to
\nallow other countries to come here and investigate the attack as
\nwell as \"to combat (terror) by all means\".<\/p>\n
\"The Security Council condemns in the strongest terms the bomb
\nattacks in Bali, Indonesia on Oct. 12, 2002 in which so many
\nlives were claimed and people injured,\" the resolution said.<\/p>\n
It also was quite clear that the incident posed a serious
\nthreat to international peace and security and cooperation was
\nthus necessary to stop it.<\/p>\n
In Jakarta, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the
\nresolution, saying that its adoption was the result of diplomatic
\nefforts to secure the full support from the international
\ncommunity to the government and people of Indonesia in combating
\nterrorism.<\/p>\n
\"The Indonesian government welcomes the adoption of UN
\nresolution 1438,\" said an official statement made available on
\nTuesday.<\/p>\n
Foreign Ministry spokesman Marty Natalegawa said on Tuesday
\nthat the vote was unanimous in the Security Council.<\/p>\n
The UN also expressed its deepest condolences and sympathy to
\nthe government and people of Indonesia, and to the victims of the
\nbomb attacks and their families.<\/p>\n
\"The Security Council urges all states, in accordance with
\ntheir obligations under resolution 1373 (2001), to work together
\nurgently and to cooperate with and provide support and
\nassistance, as appropriate, to the Indonesian authorities in
\ntheir efforts to find and bring to justice the perpetrators,
\norganizers and the sponsors of these terrorist attacks,\" the
\nresolution said.<\/p>\n
The four-point resolution was issued in the wake of the Bali
\nbombing on Saturday night which claimed over 180 lives, and
\ninjured more than 300, most of whom were international tourists,
\non the resort island for a relaxing holiday.<\/p>\n
Britain's ambassador to the United Nations, Jeremy Greenstock,
\nsaid the council consulted Indonesia before voting on the
\npossibly sensitive issue.<\/p>\n
\"The Indonesians are reeling from this, and they did want to
\nhear some expressions of international support,\" he said as
\nquoted by Agence France-Presse.<\/p>\n
Greenstock who heads the council's counter-terrorism
\ncommittee, set up in late September last year, said: \"I don't
\nthink the committee can go on doing its work and not take account
\nof an event of this magnitude.\"<\/p>\n
The council was concerned, not just at the lives lost, \"but
\nalso the effect on the economy of a country that is trying to
\ndevelop into a mature and prosperous nation,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"This was a bad one, and the people who did it are to be
\ncondemned utterly and absolutely for their indiscriminate
\nkilling ... we know what the cause was in this particular case,\"
\nGreenstock added.<\/p>\n
Minister of Foreign Affairs Hassan Wirayuda said he thought
\nthe attack was the second largest terror attack after the New
\nYork and Washington catastrophes on Sept. 11 last year.<\/p>\n
Marty said on Monday that citizens from around 20 countries
\nhad become victims of the bombing.<\/p>",
