UN investigator meets prosecutors<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The UN special rapporteur who is monitoring the legal
\nsystem here met on Friday with Indonesian state prosecutors to
\ninquire about the impediments they faced, especially in bringing
\nadditional suspects in human rights violations in East Timor to
\nthe ad hoc trial.<\/p>\n
Dato' Param Cumaraswamy, a Malaysian lawyer, said that \"there
\nare some concerns\" regarding the prosecutors' performance, but he
\nrefused to elaborate pending further discussions with the
\nminister of justice and human rights and legislators in a bid to
\nget a clearer picture about the roots of the problems.<\/p>\n
Deputy attorney general for special crimes Haryadi Widyasa
\ntold the press that Cumaraswamy was worried about the absence of
\nkey witnesses for the rights trial.<\/p>\n
The rapporteur also questioned why the state prosecutors
\nrefused to take into account some key evidence made available by
\nthe UN regarding human rights violations in East Timor in 1999.<\/p>\n
\"The rapporteur apparently assumed that the state prosecutors
\nare not doing their best,\" Haryadi added.<\/p>\n
Cumaraswamy will wind up his mission on Tuesday and will make
\nrecommendations to the government on Wednesday on how to improve
