UN chief firmly behind solving East Timor issue<\/p>\n
LISBON (AFP): UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan is determined to
\nmake progress in resolving the problem of East Timor, his special
\nenvoy Jamsheed Marker said here after three days of talks with
\nPortuguese officials.<\/p>\n
Marker is the first UN official to be appointed specifically
\nto handle the East Timor question since the Portuguese colony
\nbecame part of Indonesia more than 20 years ago.<\/p>\n
On leaving Lisbon, Marker said he had encountered
\n\"understanding and cooperation from the Portuguese authorities,
\nwho demonstrated their sincere concern in the face of the current
\nsituation in East Timor.\"<\/p>\n
The Pakistani diplomat said that he now had a clear idea of
\nthe position of the Lisbon government and public opinion in
\nPortugal, which is still considered the administrative power in
\nEast Timor by the United Nations.<\/p>\n
Marker is to go to Jakarta and Dili, the capital of East
\nTimor, at the end of this month, before submitting a report on
\nhis mission to Annan.<\/p>\n
\"We will then decide on what the United Nations can do, and we
\nwill try to reconcile the points of view of all the parties
\nconcerned to reach an equitable solution to this problem,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
During his stay here Marker had meetings with Portuguese
\nPresident Jorge Sampaio, Prime Minister Antonio Guterres, Foreign
\nMinister Jaime Gama and the representative of the East Timor
\nindependence movement in Lisbon, Roque Rodrigues.<\/p>",
