        "content": "<p>UN Assembly adopts two RI-sponsored resolutions<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The United Nations General Assembly adopted two<br>\nIndonesian-sponsored resolutions on the eve of Indonesia's UN<br>\nSecurity Council debut.<\/p>\n<p>The two resolutions, one on Third World debt and another on a<br>\nUN conference on South-South cooperation, were unanimously passed<br>\nduring the 49th session of the general assembly on Dec. 19, the<br>\nMinistry of Foreign Affairs announced.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution on the debt of developing countries was<br>\ninitiated by Indonesia and proposed on behalf of the Non-Aligned<br>\nMovement (NAM) and the Group of 77.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia's permanent representative to the United Nations,<br>\nNugroho Wisnumurti, stated that the resolution could bridge<br>\nprevailing approaches to debt management.<\/p>\n<p>\"Apart from that, it may also help formulate an effective,<br>\ncomprehensive and development-oriented strategy which could solve<br>\nthe global problem of the developing countries' debt,\" he added.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia, since assuming chairmanship of the 111-nation NAM<br>\ntwo years ago, has taken the initiative in focusing on the debt<br>\nproblem troubling many members.<\/p>\n<p>President Soeharto addressed the issue when he met with<br>\nleaders of the world's wealthiest nations at the Group of Seven<br>\nsummit meeting in Tokyo last year. In August, Indonesia also<br>\nhosted a NAM ministerial meeting to look into the debt issue and<br>\nits relationship with economic development.<\/p>\n<p>The General Assembly adopted a resolution calling for an<br>\ninternational conference to discuss cooperation between<br>\ndeveloping countries of the South. The South-South cooperation<br>\nresolution was co-sponsored by NAM, Japan and the G-77 grouping.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia's newly appointed deputy representative to the UN,<br>\nMakarim Wibisono, stressed the need for a new vision for South-<br>\nSouth cooperation in his address to the General Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>The UN conference on South-South Cooperation is expected to<br>\ntake place sometime next year.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia will be able to further the interests of developing<br>\ncountries in the world body when it joins the UN Security Council<br>\non Jan. 1. Indonesia, as a non-permanent member, will serve a<br>\ntwo-year term.<\/p>\n<p>The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has anticipated Indonesia's<br>\ngreater involvement in UN diplomacy by beefing up the its<br>\nrepresentative at the UN headquarters in New York.<\/p>\n<p>It recently relieved Makarim from his post as director for<br>\nMultilateral Economic Cooperation to serve as Nugroho's deputy on<br>\nSecurity Council affairs.<\/p>\n<p>He was replaced by Herijanto Soeprapto on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Another change at the Ministry was Yulwis Yatim's posting as<br>\nthe new director for Technical and Economic Services Cooperation.<br>\nHe is replacing Herry Harjono, who has been appointed as<br>\nIndonesia's ambassador to Laos.
