        "content": "<p>Moscow (ANTARA) - Artificial intelligence (AI) could pose an\nexistential threat to humankind and therefore needs to be addressed\nurgently, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker T\u00fcrk said on\nMonday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI agree with the concerns of industry leaders that advanced AI could\npose existential risks to humankind\u2026 I call for every effort to be made\nto ensure robust guarantees for the safety and security of AI before it\nis too late,\u201d T\u00fcrk said, according to a statement from his office.<\/p>\n<p>T\u00fcrk made the remarks during the 63rd session of the UN Human Rights\nCouncil.<\/p>\n<p>He added that he would send a letter on the matter to all leading AI\ndevelopment companies in the coming days.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, T\u00fcrk also highlighted that only a handful of people\nhold \u201calmost unlimited power over AI\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the very least, we need the countries where AI is developed and\nthe countries involved in its supply chain to jointly agree on limits\nthat must not be crossed,\u201d said T\u00fcrk.<\/p>\n<p>In December 2025, the Chief Economist of the UN Development\nProgramme\u2019s (UNDP) Asia-Pacific Regional Bureau, Philip Schellekens,\nwarned that the use of AI for military purposes could become an\nexistential threat to humankind and cause large-scale loss of life.<\/p>\n<p>Schellekens emphasised the need for highly responsible regulation to\ncontrol the use of AI in the military sphere.<\/p>\n<p>In January 2025, UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres also said that\nuncontrolled AI would become an existential threat, alongside climate\nchange and nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n<p>Source: Sputnik<\/p>",
