        "content": "<p>UMNO to study PAS merger offer<\/p>\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysia's ruling party said yesterday it<br>\nwanted to determine the motive behind fundamentalist Parti<br>\nIslam's (PAS) offer to form a coalition government in<br>\nnortheastern Kelantan state.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the deputy<br>\npresident of the United Malays National Organization (UMNO), said<br>\nthe merger would be difficult if PAS imposed conditions.<\/p>\n<p>\"As stated by the party president (Prime Minister Mahathir<br>\nMohamad), the spirit for cooperation is there and we adopt an<br>\nopen stand,\" Anwar told reporters after opening a national gas<br>\nconference.<\/p>\n<p>PAS has at the weekend offered to form a coalition government<br>\nin Kelantan state with UMNO as the Islamic party comes under<br>\npressure to quit.<\/p>\n<p>Acknowledging the state is in political crisis, Kelantan chief<br>\nminister Nik Aziz Nik Mat said his party was willing if UMNO was<br>\nsincere.
