Ulemas wage campaign against Inul<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The Indonesian Council of Ulemas (MUI) has called on
\npolitical parties not to hire \"indecently dressed\" artists to
\nattract crowds to their 2004 election campaigns.<\/p>\n
MUI Secretary Ichwan Syam said at a press conference on
\nThursday that hiring \"porn artists\" to perform in public would
\namount to \"degrading people's morality\".<\/p>\n
Ichwan Syam referred specifically to Inul Daratista, a popular
\ndangdut -- a genre of Indonesian music blending traditional
\nArabic, Indian and Malay music -- singer, as embodying the kind
\nof erotic artist he meant.<\/p>\n
Inul, who has won both fame and notoriety with her erotic
\nchoreography, is rumored to have been recruited by the Indonesian
\nDemocratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) in its 2004
\nelection campaign.<\/p>\n
Ichwan Syams insisted that the Indonesian people, known for
\ntheir high regard of religious values, should not be exposed to
\ncultural performances which might lead them to \"profanity and
\nmoral decadence\".<\/p>\n
\"The political parties which hire Inul Daratista or other such
\nerotic artists during their political rallies may be labeled as
\npromoters of immorality,\" Ichwan said. -- Antara<\/p>",
