Ulema's involvement in politics<\/p>\n
Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) ulemas' willingness to come back into
\npolitics drew attention from the Indonesian media following the
\nRembang (Central Java) meeting which was organized by NU
\npoliticians recently.<\/p>\n
But the ulemas' comeback into political life has received a
\nnegative response from Moslem intellectuals. They strongly oppose
\nthe NU's ulemas who wish to lead the Moslem-backed United
\nDevelopment Party (PPP).<\/p>\n
I feel that they are unjust to negatively judge the NU's
\nulemas since they have had a gigantic role in the political
\ndevelopment in Indonesia. They have been involved in practical
\npolitics since the birth of the republic of Indonesia.<\/p>\n
However, I observe that NU ulemas' involvement in politics is
\nnot extraordinary. Some NU figures were appointed ministers
\nduring the old order of the late President Sukarno and in
\nPresident Soeharto's New Order government.<\/p>\n
NU followers hope that their politicians can play a leading
\nrole in the PPP and perform differently. Under NU politicians'
\nleadership they expect the PPP will be able to compete with the
\nruling party, Golkar, in the next general election.<\/p>\n
