Ulemas denounce Islamic sect in W. Java<\/p>\n
BANDUNG: The Forum of Indonesian Ulemas (FUUI) issued on
\nSaturday a fatwa (religious instruction) against the existence of
\nan Islamic sect in West Java, whose activities allegedly deviated
\nfrom Islamic teachings.<\/p>\n
Speaking at a mass gathering in the Istiqomah mosque in
\nBandung, FUUI chairman Athian Ali contended that the activities
\nof the religious sect occurred in the Ma'had al-Zaytun Islamic
\nboarding school in Indramayu, West Java.<\/p>\n
He claimed that the deeds the Islamic sect practiced were not
\nbased on the syariah (Islamic law), which, in his view, was a
\nsin.<\/p>\n
The religious sect, for example, allegedly allowed its members
\nto kill outsiders and steal valuables to fund its activities.
\nSins of committing adultery and other crimes were allegedly
\nresolved and forgiven through the payment of a fine.<\/p>\n
During the gathering, Gia Apriani, one of the former members
\nof the sect, confirmed that she was recruited by the activists of
\nthe group and brought to Lebak Bulus in South Jakarta for a
