Ulemas against human cloning<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The cloning of humans is haram, or forbidden by
\nIslamic law, because it is against the will of Allah, according
\nto the influential Indonesian Council of Ulemas.<\/p>\n
Chairman Hasan Basri and deputy chairman Ali Yafie made the
\nMoslem leaders' stance on the matter clear during the council's
\nnational meeting here over the weekend.<\/p>\n
Hasan said Friday the shariah (Islamic law) allowed people to
\nstudy cloning as a scientific venture, but it should be
\nrestricted to animal and plants.<\/p>\n
Yafie said Saturday that he believed Indonesian scientists
\nwere still incapable of cloning humans. He also promised the
\ncouncil would study the issue before issuing a religious edict,
\nor fatwa, on cloning.<\/p>\n
About 87 percent of Indonesia's 200 million population are
\nMoslems.<\/p>\n
\"It's a bit premature to talk about it now. Besides, we need
\ntime to gather information,\" he said. \"Discussions on cloning are
\nnot our priority now, though we do have stance on the issue and
\nhave expressed it several times.<\/p>\n
\"Human cloning is not allowed,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The question of cloning humans has caused alarm in many
\ncountries. The United States is currently trying to pass a law
\nbanning human cloning, while Egypt has already refused to let
\nscientists clone a pharaoh.<\/p>\n
Pope John Paul II has also expressed disapproval on the
\ncloning of humans, as has the World Health Organization. (12)<\/p>",
