Ulema not amused by tight aerobics outfits<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A Moslem leader in Riau is finding the tight
\noutfits worn by female aerobic buffs too much to take.<\/p>\n
\"If they have to wear them they should do aerobics indoors and
\nnot in public places. That way they won't offend people who still
\ncling to Eastern cultural and traditional norms,\" Hamid Sulaiman,
\nthe chief of the Riau's Moslem Ulema Council, said as reported by
\nthe Antara news agency.<\/p>\n
Hamid said he has received numerous complaints from members of
\nthe public about the aerobic outfits worn by people in public
\nplaces and on television.<\/p>\n
They said they found the outfits \"indecent\".<\/p>\n
\"If the chief objective is to exercise, then why do we get the
\nimpression that aerobics is placing greater emphasis on the
\noutfit?\" he asked.<\/p>\n
Hamid said he welcomed a statement by State Minister of Sports
\nand Youth Affairs Hayono Isman, reportedly made on a television
\nnewscast, suggesting that Indonesian aerobic buffs should dress
\nmore in accordance with the local culture.<\/p>\n
\"I'm encouraged to hear his comment. This is the first time
\nthat a minister addressed the issue which has been a concern of
\nmany Moslems, particularly the ulemas,\" he said. (emb)<\/p>",
