Ukrainian President arrives in town<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma arrived here
\nyesterday on a four-day state visit which marks a new high in
\ndiplomatic relations between the two countries.<\/p>\n
On his arrival after a brief visit to Vietnam, Kuchma and his
\nwife, Ludmyla, were greeted on the steps of the State Palace by
\nPresident Soeharto and First Lady Mrs. Tien Soeharto.<\/p>\n
After declaring independence following the break-up of the
\nSoviet Union, Ukraine and Indonesia re-established diplomatic
\nrelations in 1992.<\/p>\n
Despite the absence of direct diplomacy for several decades,
\nties between the two countries date back to the early days of
\nIndonesian independence.<\/p>\n
It was the Ukrainian representative in 1946 who brought the
\nIndonesian issue to the United Nations Security Council and
\ncalled for the world body recognize Indonesia. At the time
\nIndonesia was still bitterly defending its newly declared
\nindependence.<\/p>\n
The two countries have also worked together in international
\norganizations such as the Non-Aligned Movement after Ukraine
\nbecame a guest at the 11th summit in Cartagena, Colombia, last
\nyear.<\/p>\n
Indonesia's Minister\/State Secretary Moerdiono said the aim of
\nthe visit is to improve relations and enhance economic
\ncooperation between the two countries.<\/p>\n
During a dinner reception yesterday evening Soeharto praised
\nUkraine's decision to become a nuclear-free state and noted the
\npotential for cooperation between the countries.<\/p>\n
The two heads of state are scheduled to hold bilateral talks
\nlater this morning while respective ministers from both sides
\nhold parallel talks.<\/p>\n
Kuchma is accompanied by Foreign Minister Gennady Udovenko,
\nMinister of International Economic Cooperation Serhiy Ossyka,
\nMinister for Military Industry Velery Malev, Minister of Industry
\nValery Mazur and Minister of Labor Mykhailo Kaskevych.<\/p>\n
The Ukrainian president will leave to visit Yogyakarta and
\nBali on Friday before returning home on Saturday. (mds)<\/p>",
