UII denies nominating Soeharto<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Islamic University (UII) here
\ndenied yesterday it had ever declared support for President
\nSoeharto's renomination to another term of office.<\/p>\n
Speaking in a press conference, Deputy Rector Moh. Mahfud
\nreferred to a news article in Kompas on Nov. 21 which said the
\nuniversity renominated Soeharto for the presidency.<\/p>\n
\"The university has never nominated anyone for the presidency
\nor the vice presidency,\" Mahfud said. The daily's news article
\nwas written under the heading Habibie, Hartono, Try Sutrisno
\nDiusulkan Jadi Cawapres (Habibie, Hartono, and Try Sutrisno for
\nvice presidency).<\/p>\n
The daily quoted Poedjono Prayitno, chairman of the People's
\nConsultative Assembly (MPR) Working Committee, as saying that UII
\nwas one of 13 parties wanting Soeharto to be renominated for the
\npresidency.<\/p>\n
Mahfud said the university had sent a delegation to the MPR on
\nOct. 14 and that it was met by Poedjono, but did not make any
\nsuch declaration.<\/p>\n
Mahfud said the university only submitted a book to the MPR
\ntitled: Tantangan Pembangunan Indonesia: Pandangan Kontemporer
\ndari Dunia Kampus dan Executive Summary (The Challenges of
\nIndonesian Development: A Contemporary View from the Campus and
\nan Executive Summary).<\/p>\n
The delegation requested the Assembly study and interpret an
\narticle on presidency under the 1945 Constitution, he said.<\/p>\n
Various groups, especially those affiliated with the dominant
\nGolkar, have openly declared their support for the renomination
\nof Soeharto for the 1998\/2003 presidency. No universities have
