UI to host overnight gathering on reform<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Up to 10,000 university students and lecturers
\nin Greater Jakarta are expected to participate in an evening of
\nmusic and discussions about reform at the University of
\nIndonesia's Depok campus tonight.<\/p>\n
Effendi Gazali, chairman of the organizing committee, said at
\na media conference here yesterday the event would kick off at 5
\np.m. and finish about 5 a.m. tomorrow.<\/p>\n
It is to feature singers and poets who will present their
\nviews on reform, he said.<\/p>\n
\"A long list of noted musicians and singers, including Iwan
\nFals, Doel Sumbang, (Group) Kantata Taqwa, Harry Roesli, Franky
\nRaden, Franky Sahilatua, and poets such as WS Rendra and Remy
\nSilado and Sutardji Calzoum Bahri will present their best works
\non stage,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Comedians Dono and Indro of the Warkop DKI Group will be the
\nmasters of ceremony at the event, which is hosted by the
\nAssociation of Alumni of the University of Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Effendi said intellectuals and politicians would deliver
\nspeeches on reform.<\/p>\n
\"Sri Bintang Pamungkas and Arbi Sanit will speak on political
\nreform; Sri Mulyani Indrawati and Faisal Basri on economic
\nreform; Muchtar Pakpahan, Mulya Lubis and Satya Arinanto on law
\nreform, while Selo Soemardjan and Paulus Wirutomo will speak on
\nculture.\"<\/p>\n
Ira Koesno of private TV station SCTV and Wimar Witoelar will
\nact as moderators.<\/p>\n
Effendi said students who planned to attend the gathering were
\nexpected to wear their university's alma mater jackets and bring
\ncandles for a midnight meditation.<\/p>\n
He said marines would be deployed to maintain security during
\nthe night-long gathering.<\/p>\n
Separately, the Association of Students of the University of
\nIndonesia (KBUI) distanced itself yesterday from the event.<\/p>\n
\"Students are not involved in organizing the gathering and the
\nAssociation of Alumni of University of Indonesia should be held
\nresponsible if the gathering does not run smoothly,\" KBUI
\nchairman Agus Gede Mahendra said in a statement. (rms)<\/p>",
