        "content": "<p>UI to continue admission program<\/p>\n<p>The Jakarta Post, Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>Despite opposition from the House of Representatives (DPR), the<br>\nUniversity of Indonesia (UI) decided on Monday to pursue its<br>\nspecial admission program, auctioning off a percentage of its<br>\nseats to the highest bidders.<\/p>\n<p>The university, however, gave its assurance that the number of<br>\nstudents accepted through the special program would not exceed 20<br>\npercent of the total students it planned to admit in the 2003\/04<br>\nacademic year.<\/p>\n<p>The decision was taken after university leaders held a meeting<br>\nwith other stakeholders to decide whether or not to continue with<br>\nthe program.<\/p>\n<p>It also came just one day before the two-day entrance tests<br>\nfor 48 state universities across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of thousands of students are expected to participate<br>\nin the tests to contest 82,969 seats in the 48 state universities<br>\ninvolving 1,583 study programs.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, there were only 80,000 seats available spread in 46<br>\nstate universities with a ratio application accepted of about<br>\n1:6.<\/p>\n<p>UI said in a statement on Monday that 20 percent of its seats<br>\nwould be auctioned for between Rp 25 million (US$3,000) and Rp 75<br>\nmillion each, depending on the study program. Students entering<br>\nthe university through the special program would have to pay a<br>\ntuition fee of Rp 7.5 million per semester.<\/p>\n<p>And to maintain the quality of its program, the university<br>\nalso requires students entering through the special program to<br>\nhave achieved an average grade of at least seven in the final<br>\nyear of senior high school.<\/p>\n<p>Study programs included in the special admission program<br>\ninclude dentistry, mathematics, natural science, computer<br>\nscience, law, cultural studies, psychology and social and<br>\npolitical science.<\/p>\n<p>UI, one of the four state universities allowed to manage their<br>\nown funds, pledged to reevaluate study programs included in the<br>\nspecial admission scheme as required by the House.<\/p>\n<p>The Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), the Yogyakarta-<br>\nbased Gadjah Mada University (UGM), and the Bogor Institute of<br>\nAgriculture (IPB) have also been given the authority to manage<br>\ntheir funds.<\/p>",
