UI student who knocked down troops released<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Police said on Wednesday that a student detained
\nfor driving his vehicle into a cordon of security personnel,
\ninjuring nine soldiers in the process, was released on Nov. 27.<\/p>\n
City police chief Maj. Gen. Noegroho Djajoesman told The
\nJakarta Post that police inquiries into Anas Allamoedi in
\nrelation to the incident of Nov. 11 on Jl. Imam Bonjol, Central
\nJakarta, were complete.<\/p>\n
\"We're just waiting for the legal process to progress,\" he
\nsaid. Anas will be required to report regularly to the police.<\/p>\n
The reasons for his release, he said, were that first, \"the
\nArmed Forces did not want to be considered seeking revenge\" for
\nthe student's alleged action.<\/p>\n
Noegroho also said there was a request from the University of
\nIndonesia's School of Law, where Anas studies, that the student
\nbe given permission to sit his exams.<\/p>\n
Noegroho also cited the Criminal Code procedures which says a
\nsuspect may be detained for a maximum of 20 days.<\/p>\n
Noegroho denied there was any pressure to release Anas.<\/p>\n
Late last month Noegroho said police were undecided
\nwhether to release Anas on bail.<\/p>\n
Anas was detained after he drove his red VW Safari car through
\na cordon of troops drawn up to prevent student protesters from
\nmarching toward the People's Consultative Assembly building.<\/p>\n
He reportedly originally faced charges of attempted murder,
\nwhich under the Criminal Code carries a maximum sentence of 15
\nyears imprisonment. He was also charged with causing bodily harm,
\nwhich carries a maximum sentence of five years imprisonment, and
\nof carelessness causing injury to others, which also carries a
\nmaximum sentence of five years imprisonment.<\/p>\n
But Noegroho announced later that Anas would only be charged
\nwith a traffic offense, although this could still result in a
\njail term.<\/p>\n
His lawyer Apong Herlina, director of the Jakarta Legal Aid
\nInstitute, has said Anas' defense would be self-defense, in that
\nhe stepped on the gas pedal in panic. (imn)<\/p>",
