        "content": "<p>The University of Indonesia (UI) has responded to the controversy\nthat arose after the social media account of the Student Activity Unit\n(UKM) Pers Suara Mahasiswa (SUMA) UI uploaded a post related to Pride\nMonth and LGBTIQ issues. The campus management stressed that the post\nwas the editorial view of the student organisation and did not represent\nthe university\u2019s official stance. \u201cRegarding the dynamics developing\nover the social media post by the Student Activity Unit (UKM) Suara\nMahasiswa (SUMA) UI concerning Pride Month and issues of sexual\norientation and gender identity, the University of Indonesia asserts\nthat the content of the post is purely the editorial view of the student\norganisation concerned,\u201d read an official statement from UI delivered by\nthe Director of Public Relations, Media, Government and International\nAffairs, Erwin Agustian Panigoro, quoted on Sunday (14\/6). \u201cThe content\ndoes not reflect the official stance of the University of Indonesia or\nthe entire UI academic community,\u201d he added. UI emphasised that freedom\nof expression and opinion is part of academic life that must be\nrespected. However, this freedom must also be exercised responsibly,\nwith due regard to prevailing ethics and norms. As a higher education\ninstitution, UI affirmed its commitment to upholding the values of\nPancasila, statutory regulations, and the norms applicable in Indonesia.\nThe campus also places respect for human dignity, integrity, and the\ncreation of a safe and conducive academic environment as the main\nprinciples in implementing the Tri Dharma of Higher Education. \u201cIn this\nspirit, UI views the campus as a space for dialogue and the development\nof knowledge that is open to various views. However, every opinion needs\nto be conveyed politely, not provocatively, and in accordance with\nacademic ethics,\u201d the UI statement read. UI considers that differences\nof opinion in society must be managed wisely. Therefore, freedom of\nexpression needs to be balanced with social responsibility so as not to\ncause division. As a follow-up to the developing polemic, the campus\nmanagement is currently conducting an internal review and evaluation of\nthe matter. Following up on the dynamics and public unease arising from\nthe post, UI leadership is currently undertaking further internal review\nand evaluation steps. \u201cThis process is being carried out together with\nthe relevant campus authorities to ensure that every student activity is\nalways in line with the UI Student Code of Ethics and Disciplinary\nRegulations, and guided by the corridors of responsible academic\nfreedom,\u201d UI stressed. UI also invited the entire academic community and\nthe public to maintain a conducive atmosphere and respect differences of\nopinion in order to preserve unity. Separately, alumni of Pers Suara\nMahasiswa UI also conveyed their stance on the viral post. Through an\nofficial statement uploaded by the account <span class=\"citation\" data-cites=\"ilunisumaui\">@ilunisumaui<\/span>, the alumni expressed\nregret over the content titled \u2018Menguji Sila Kemanusiaan di Bulan\nKebanggaan\u2019 (Testing the Principle of Humanity in Pride Month) published\nby SUMA UI on Instagram and X. \u201cAlumni of Pers Suara Mahasiswa\nUniversitas Indonesia (SUMA UI) regret the post on Instagram and X\n(formerly Twitter) by Suara Mahasiswa Universitas Indonesia (SUMA UI)\ntitled \u2018Sila Kemanusiaan di Bulan Kebanggaan\u2019. SUMA UI alumni have tried\nto provide input to the SUMA UI Editorial Board to consider the social\ncontext while maintaining editorial independence in carrying out its\njournalistic work,\u201d the SUMA UI alumni statement read, quoted from their\nsocial media account, <span class=\"citation\" data-cites=\"ilunisumaui\">@ilunisumaui<\/span>, on Sunday (14\/6).\nAccording to the alumni, since its establishment in 1992, SUMA UI has\nbeen known as a student press organisation that upholds diversity,\nmaintains a moderate stance, and prioritises nonpartisan principles in\nits journalistic work. Therefore, they assessed that the post was not in\nline with the spirit the organisation has built over the years. \u201cSUMA UI\nalumni hereby express their objection and regret over the post, which is\ndeemed inconsistent with the spirit of a student press organisation not\nto lean towards any particular group,\u201d the SUMA UI Alumni stressed. In\naddition, the alumni also regretted the attitude of the editorial board,\nwhich was considered not to have opened space for discussion and\naccepted input regarding the controversial post. They assessed that the\npolemic had caused unease among the academic community, alumni, and the\nwider public, and had the potential to negatively impact the UI student\nmovement. Nonetheless, the alumni affirmed their continued support for\nfreedom of expression exercised responsibly, taking into account the\nethics and moral values prevailing in society. \u201cSUMA UI alumni will\ncontinue to open dialogue efforts with the SUMA UI Editorial Board.\nHopefully, this incident will not be repeated,\u201d the SUMA UI alumni\nconcluded.
