UI rector ignores court order and warning<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Lawyers of University of Indonesia (UI) rector
\nAsman Boedi Santoso said on Monday that their client would
\ncontinue with the suspension of six students despite a court
\norder.<\/p>\n
The decision goes against a preliminary ruling and a warning
\nby the Jakarta State Administrative Court that the rector let the
\nstudents attend classes pending the court's verdict over the
\ncase.<\/p>\n
"Pak Asman will continue imposing the decision until the court
\nissues a verdict on the students' lawsuit," coordinator of UI
\nrector's team of lawyers Retno Murniati told two of the suspended
\nstudents, Dipo Asto Prayoga and Maha Wisnu TA, at her office on
\nUI's Depok campus, south of here.<\/p>\n
Retno said the court order instructing the rector to delay the
\nsuspensions had no strong legal grounds.<\/p>\n
"Moreover, the rector also filed an objection to the court
\norder. The court has yet to reply," she said.<\/p>\n
The six students, who have been suspended for between six
\nmonths and one year for organizing a rally last year, filed suit
\nagainst the rector on Feb. 1. They are demanding that the letter
\nof decision, signed by the rector, be revoked and that Rp 5
\nmillion (US$526) in damages be awarded.<\/p>\n
In a preliminary ruling on Feb. 8, the administrative court
\nordered the UI rector to postpone the suspensions and allow the
\nstudents to continue their studies.<\/p>\n
Since Asman disobeyed the court order, the administrative
\ncourt issued a warning on Feb. 20.<\/p>\n
The rector's decision No. 266\/SK\/R\/UI\/2000, dated Nov. 16,
\n2000, prohibits the six students from attending classes and other
\nuniversity activities beginning January 2001.<\/p>\n
Two law students, Lucky Lontoh and Dhoho Ali Sastro, have been
\nsuspended for two semesters. Four other students -- law students
\nDipo and Maha Wisnu, literature student Dewi Astuti and
\nengineering student Fezan Gustamo Rozak -- are also banned from
\nclasses during the first semester of the year.<\/p>\n
Dipo told The Jakarta Post that he and his friends could not
\nattend classes since the rectorate rejected them when they
\nattempted to register for this semester.<\/p>\n
"We are trying to lobby lecturers to let us join the lectures
\nto save credits," Dipo said.<\/p>\n
Separately, one of the students' lawyer, Taufik Basari, told
\nthe Post at the Jakarta Legal Aid Institute (LBH Jakarta) that
\nthe office would also ask President Abdurrahman Wahid to
\nreprimand the rector for the disobeying court order and for
\nignoring the warning.<\/p>\n
"We are now preparing a letter requesting a meeting with
\nPresident Abdurrahman Wahid as soon as he returns home from his
\noverseas trip," Taufik said. (01)<\/p>",
