UI rector disobeys court's orders<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A lawyer of six students from the University of
\nIndonesia (UI) said on Wednesday that the university rector had
\ndisobeyed the court's order to delay imposing administrative
\nsanctions against the students.<\/p>\n
\"Rector Asman Boedi Santoso's disobedience to the court's
\norder reflects his arrogance and the university's repressive
\nattitude toward democracy on campus,\" lawyer Christina Rini
\nYuliarti told journalists at the Jakarta Legal Aid Institute
\n(LBH) office.<\/p>\n
She said LBH had just sent a letter to the Jakarta State
\nAdministrative Court asking the court to warn the rector about
\nhis arrogant attitude.<\/p>\n
LBH will also ask President Abdurrahman Wahid to reprimand the
\nrector for not executing the court's ruling, she said.<\/p>\n
The six students, who were suspended for between six months
\nand one year for conducting a rally last year, filed their
\nlawsuit against the rector on Feb. 1. They demanded that the
\nsuspension, signed by the rector, be revoked and that Rp 5
\nmillion (US$526) in damages be awarded.<\/p>\n
In a preliminary ruling last week the Jakarta Administrative
\nCourt ordered the UI rector to postpone the students' suspension
\nand allow them to continue their studies.<\/p>\n
\"(The rector) must not take any action which could impede the
\nplaintiffs' studies while their (legal) action is still being
\nconsidered by the court,\" the ruling stated.<\/p>\n
Christina said she and her clients had gone to see the rector
\na day after the court's ruling was issued but he refused to meet
\nwith them.<\/p>\n
The rector's lawyer, Retno, had earlier said that the rector
\nwould issue a decision in response to the court's ruling on Feb.
\n13.<\/p>\n
\"But on Feb. 13, the rector stated his objection to the ruling
\nand had filed his objection with the court,\" Retno said.<\/p>\n
Christina said the students had begun attending lectures
\ndespite the rectorate's rejection of their registration proposal.<\/p>\n
\"We're not registered as students but we will join the
\nlectures because the lecturers allow us to do so,\" Dhoho A.
