UI rector defends student suspension<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Rector of the University of Indonesia (UI)
\ndefends his decision on the suspension of a student of the
\nmedicine school.<\/p>\n
In his defense in the Jakarta State Administrative Court
\nyesterday, the rector said that his decision did not contradict
\nwith the university statutes. \"The suspension has been considered
\ncarefully.\"<\/p>\n
The rector established a committee for resolution of
\nviolations at the University of Indonesia before decided to
\nsuspend Rifardi Rifiar, according to the rector's lawyer Retno
\nMurniati.<\/p>\n
After studying any matter and holding meeting eight times, the
\ncommittee found that Rifardi, a sixth class student of the school
\nof medicine, had caused disturbances and disorder at the campus.<\/p>\n
The student violated article 4 of the University of
\nIndonesia's regulation number 3, issued in 1994, according to the
\ncommittee.<\/p>\n
Rector of the University of Indonesia on Dec. 1 issued a
\ndecision strengthening the decision of the school of medicine
\ndean on the suspension of Rifardi for three months.<\/p>\n
The suspension, began on Nov. 2, 1995, was decided on the
\nground that he beat up seven other students of the school of
\nmedicine.<\/p>\n
The beating, which led to one student being hospitalized for
\n11 days with serious injuries, is against campus regulations,
\naccording to the dean.<\/p>\n
Rifardi filed a lawsuit against the dean and rector with the
\nJakarta State Administrative Court over the suspension, saying
\nthat he was not given any chance to defend.<\/p>\n
However, rector's lawyer denied the accusation, saying that
\nthe rector, through the committee for resolution of violations,
\nhad called Rifardi for four times. Rifardi did not respond
\nrector's calls, according to the lawyer.<\/p>\n
Rifardi's lawyer O.C. Kaligis yesterday complained to Judge
\nMustahdi that the plan of medicine school dean and rector of the
\nUniversity of Indonesia to meet Chief Justice was unethical since
\nthe dispute was in trial.<\/p>\n
Dean of the school of medicine Girindro Pringgodigdo said on
\nFriday that he and the rector would meet Chief Justice to explain
\nthe case which UI faced in the Jakarta State Administrative
\nCourt.<\/p>\n
He declined to say whether meeting with Chief Justice to
\nexplain a case which was in trial.<\/p>\n
