UI lecturer denies punching student<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Purnawidhi Wardana, a lecturer at the University
\nof Indonesia's law school, denied here yesterday reports that he
\npunched a student activist during a rally on the campus compound
\non Tuesday.<\/p>\n
\"I did drive away the student rally because their noise was
\ndisturbing an examination in one of the law school classes.
\nHowever, I did not punch anybody,\" Purnawidhi, a lecturer of law
\nphilosophy, told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
About 80 university students were protesting irregularities,
\nincluding the sharply increasing tuition fees, which they
\nconsider a burden on students from low-income families.<\/p>\n
They also demanded that the rectorate bring back the defunct
\nWarta UI campus bulletin, which the rectorate banned for taking a
\npoll on the fee hikes.<\/p>\n
Purnawidhi said that he forced the students to leave the law
\nschool compound because he feared that the yelling of the
\nprotesting students, carrying guitars and a loud speaker, would
\ndisturb the concentration of law school students taking their
\nexaminations.<\/p>\n
\"Moreover it is my job to get rid of such rallies. I was
\nforced to speak loudly at the time because the protesting
\nstudents were very disturbing,\" said Purnawidhi, who is an
\nassistant to the law school dean in charge of student activities.
