UI graduates prefer to work in private firms<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Dean of the University of Indonesia's School of
\nEconomics (FEUI) Dorodjatun Kuntjoro-Jakti said yesterday that
\nhis school graduates are increasingly interested in working in
\nthe private sector rather than government institutions.<\/p>\n
\"The interest of FEUI graduates to enter the bureaucracy is
\nvery low,\" he told reporters after an alumni gathering
\ncelebrating the school's 45th anniversary at Depok, south of
\nJakarta. In his previous official anniversary speech, Dorodjatun
\nsaid that the school's graduates normally are absorbed by firms
\nright after graduation.<\/p>\n
Dorodjatun noted that graduates prefer the private sector
\nbecause it offers brighter careers. \"The private companies offer
\nmore prospective careers because seniority is not significant,
\nwhich is far different from government institutions which are
\nfirmly tied up with seniority issues in their system,\" he said.<\/p>\n
After 45 years, the school has produced Indonesia's finest set
\nof intellectuals and businessmen. In the early years of the New
\nOrder, economists from this school masterminded Indonesia's
\neconomic scheme. Its alumni traditionally dominate the
\nministerial cabinets during the Soeharto era, only outnumbered by
\nthe military.<\/p>\n
Currently there are five FEUI graduates, who still hold
\nministerial positions, including outspoken Minister of Finance
\nMa'rie Muhammad and governor of Bank Indonesia Soedradjad
\nDjiwandono. This has earned the school its nickname of \"the
\nminister's school\".<\/p>\n
Dorodjatun also admitted that his school's students and
\ngraduates seemed to have become more and more separated from the
\npeople. \"I think this is because of our close link to the Jakarta
\nsociety, which sets its orientation to the elite class.\"<\/p>\n
Yesterday's celebration was also attended by economics pundit
\nWidjojo Nitisastro, the school's former dean and one of the
\nmasterminds of Indonesia's rapid economic growth.<\/p>\n
Widjojo warned the school's scientific community not to become
\ncreators of simple handymen. \"We must not produce simple
\nhandymen. We should create intellectuals,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"Handymen only fulfill their duties without minding if their
\nwork is misused or not,\" the former minister said before the
\naudience of past and present school members. \"Intellectuals would
\nnot act like that. They would object if their skills were used
\nfor things contradicting their conscience.\"<\/p>\n
Complying with Widjojo's views, Dorodjatun observed that
\ntoday's education is heading for practical applications. \"It
\nsometimes forgets its own moral commitment. Remember, you must
\nnot use knowledge only as a tool,\" said Dorodjatun, who was a
\nfreshman when Widjojo was the dean of the school.<\/p>\n
This year's commemoration was the school's first after it
\nmoved from the inner-city Salemba campus in Central Jakarta to
\nthe distant but sophisticated Depok campus. The school of
\neconomics has the broadest area among the university's 11 schools
\nin Depok. It is also the most sophisticated with the best
\ncollection of books and the most reliable academic facilities.<\/p>\n
Yesterday Dorodjatun also inaugurated the Makara (the
\nUniversity of Indonesia's symbol) water fountain that adds
\nfinesse to the already splashy campus. The fountain was a gift
\nfrom the school's class of '60.<\/p>\n
But FEUI's grandeur was \"criticized\" by the university's vice
\nrector Asman Budisantoso in his speech. \"I admit that FEUI is the
\nwealthiest school in the university. But it has to remember to
\ncross-subsidize other schools which are not as fortunate,\" he
