UI forges links with Zagazig University<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): University of Indonesia and Egypt's Zagazig
\nUniversity signed a memorandum of understanding yesterday on
\nresearch and exchange programs.<\/p>\n
The memorandum, signed at University of Indonesia's campus in
\nDepok, a town south of here, is the first agreement between the
\ntwo universities.<\/p>\n
The memorandum was signed by University of Indonesia Rector
\nM.K. Tadjuddin and the secretary-general of the Supreme Council
\nof Universities of Egypt, Magid Amin Ahmad, on behalf of Zagazig
\nUniversity.<\/p>\n
Egyptian Minister of Education Hussein Kamel Bahaa Eldin, in
\nIndonesia at the invitation of the Ministry of Education and
\nCulture, attended the signing ceremony.<\/p>\n
Tadjuddin said that University of Indonesia had been
\nconcentrating considerably on Middle Eastern and Islamic studies.<\/p>\n
"We feel that the Middle East is an important region to us.
\nEgypt is one of the most prominent countries in the region,"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
Minister Bahaa Eldin said the agreement marked Egypt's and
\nIndonesia's 50-year-old relationship.<\/p>\n
"This is the beginning of a new era of cooperation especially
\nin tertiary education, which is a necessity in this age of the
\ninformation technology revolution," the minister said.<\/p>\n
Egypt was the first nation to acknowledge Indonesia's
\nindependence in 1947; two years after Indonesia had proclaimed
\nits independence from the Dutch and two years before official
\nDutch decolonization.<\/p>\n
During his five day visit, the minister has visited several
\nschools in Greater Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The Egyptian Embassy explained yesterday why Bahaa Eldin did
\nnot show up last Friday at the SMP 13 junior high school in South
\nJakarta, where 400 students had prepared to greet him.<\/p>\n
The embassy released a statement that the minister was not to
\nblame for not attending because the visit was not on his
\nschedule.<\/p>\n
The visit was apparently on his initial schedule which was
\nchanged by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture.<\/p>\n
"The embassy was in no way involved in preparing the change in
\nthe program. Therefore the Embassy of Egypt is not responsible
\nfor something it did not take part in."<\/p>\n
When the minister was due to be at the school, he was speaking
\nat an international symposium on vocational education at the
\nJakarta Convention Center. (35)<\/p>",
