UI denies media reports<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The University of Indonesia has dismissed media
\ncoverage of a trial between one of its students and the dean of
\nits school of medicine as erroneous.<\/p>\n
Tjiptaningsih Hadisuryo, the spokesperson for the university,
\nsaid the trial's coverage by five newspapers and one private
\ntelevision station early this month had been imbalanced and
\ninaccurate.<\/p>\n
\"The reports might have misled readers and viewers,\" she said
\nin a written statement made available yesterday.<\/p>\n
The student, identified as Rifardi Rifiar, beat up seven
\njunior students who did not fight back, Tjiptaningsih said.<\/p>\n
\"The beating, which led to one student being hospitalized for
\n11 days with serious injuries, is against campus regulations,\"
\nshe said.<\/p>\n
She denied media reports which said that Rifardi had been
\ninvolved in an argument with a group of students.<\/p>\n
The dean of the school of medicine suspended Rifardi for three
\nmonths and the university gave him 14 days in which to request a
\nreduced suspension. \"The student filed a lawsuit against the dean
\nwith the Jakarta Administrative Court instead,\" the spokesperson
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The administrative court has officially asked the dean to
\ndelay his decision on the suspension of Rifardi. (sur)<\/p>",
