        "content": "<p>The United States and Iran have officially signed a Memorandum of\nUnderstanding (MoU) that serves as a foundation for both countries to\ncontinue diplomatic processes and discuss various strategic issues that\nhave been sources of tension. Chair of the Centre for American Studies\nat the University of Indonesia, Suzie Sudarman, assessed that the\nagreement has the potential to ease the conflict that has been looming\nover the Middle East region. According to her, the main focus is now on\nthe possible reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global\nenergy trade. \u201cYes, clearly everyone is waiting for the reopening of the\nStrait of Hormuz. Israel has been left behind by President Trump and\ncannot walk alone without Trump,\u201d Suzie told Media Indonesia on Thursday\n(18\/6). She assessed that Iran obtained the interests it had long\ndesired through the agreement. On the other hand, both countries also\nhave room to claim their own diplomatic successes. \u201cIran got what it\nneeded; both countries can declare victory,\u201d she said. Regarding who\nbenefits and who loses from the MoU, whether from a geopolitical,\nregional security, or global economic interest perspective, Suzie\nbelieves both the US and Iran gain advantages. \u201cWhile both the US and\nIran get what they want, Israel is the one cast aside,\u201d she stated.\nAccording to Suzie, Israel\u2019s position is the most affected by the\nagreement because it potentially loses the full support previously\nprovided by Washington in confronting Iran. Regarding the MoU\u2019s\nsustainability in the future, including if there is a change in\npolitical leadership in the US or Iran, Suzie believes the chances of\nthe agreement enduring are quite high. She emphasised that a memorandum\nof understanding is a common diplomatic instrument used in international\nrelations. \u201cMoUs are often made even if they do not materialise into a\nformal agreement, but it is safe because the US is more worried about\nIran\u2019s actions than Iran is afraid of the US,\u201d she said. According to\nher, the strategic interests of both countries will be one of the main\ndetermining factors in maintaining the communication and diplomacy built\nthrough the MoU.<\/p>",
