UI abandons street protests<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): University of Indonesia (UI) students decided on
\nMonday to continue their struggle for justice in the killing of a
\nfellow student without resorting to street protests.<\/p>\n
Yap Yun Hap, a student of UI's Department of Electrical
\nEngineering, was shot on Friday amid two days of rallies
\nprotesting the newly approved state security bill. A fact-finding
\nteam said on Monday that security personnel were responsible for
\nthe shooting.<\/p>\n
\"We will find a way to investigate the case and we will form
\nour own investigative team,\" a member of the UI Students
\nExecutive Board, Arie Wibowo, said.<\/p>\n
None of the investigative teams already formed by other
\norganizations, including one led by National Institute of
\nSciences reasercher Hermawan Sulistyo which held a news
\nconference on Monday, have contacted the executive board about
\nthe case, Arie said.<\/p>\n
To support the investigation process, forensic experts from
\nCipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital have promised that the bullet
\nremoved from Yun Hap's body will be stored as important evidence.<\/p>\n
\"We are still in mourning. We will decide what steps to take
\nto investigate the case after our three days of mourning are
\nover. We will also demand that the military be held responsible
\nfor the shooting,\" Arie said.<\/p>\n
He added that the executive board would not let the incident
\nbe forgotten like the killing of four Trisakti University
\nstudents last year.<\/p>\n
Students also died during mass protests at Atma Jaya
\nUniversity last November.<\/p>\n
Police say Yun Hap was one of eight people killed last week
\nbut his death attracted considerable media and public interest.<\/p>\n
Hundreds of UI students from the university's two campuses in
\nDepok and Salemba held a solidarity ceremony at the main campus
\nin Depok in memory of Yun Hap on Monday.<\/p>\n
During the ceremony the students changed the name of the main
\nstreet on the campus from Jl. Lingkar UI to Jl. Yun Hap.<\/p>\n
The students, who skipped classes for the ceremony, gathered
\nin the street and burned a military jacket.<\/p>\n
\"The burning is a symbol that we are against militarism but it
\ndoes not means that we hate the military,\" Arie explained.<\/p>\n
Yun Hap's father, Yap Pit Sing said that he was counting on UI
\nto clarify the facts of his son's killing.<\/p>\n
\"Now I can accept the death of my son and that he has become a
\nmartyr to his friends in this struggle,\" Yap said in a short
\nspeech after the burning of the jacket.<\/p>\n
The students, wearing their university's yellow jackets,
\nclosed the ceremony by conducting a joint prayer for Yun Hap.<\/p>\n
Yun Hap was a third year student with a high grade point
\naverage. He was also a student activist and was arrested
\nlast April during a rally protesting the dual role of the
\nmilitary.<\/p>\n
UI will attempt to solve the case and bring the perpetrator to
