UGM mulls title for Iliescu<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA: Gadjah Mada University (UGM) Rector Sofian Effendi
\nsaid on Wednesday the university was considering awarding
\nRomanian President Ion Iliescu an honorary doctorate.<\/p>\n
He said the university's Professorial Council had formed a
\nteam to gather the necessary information on Iliescu needed to
\ngrant the president a recipient of the academic title.<\/p>\n
Iliescu visited the university as part of his trip to the
\nsultanate town. He also visited Prambanan temple, some 20
\nkilometers east of here.<\/p>\n
Sofian said the university had received a call from the
\nMinistry of Foreign Affairs, asking about the possibility of
\nawarding Iliescu an honorary doctorate in culture and humanities.<\/p>\n
"I hope to relay the decision of the council to Your
\nExcellency in time," Sofian said in his welcome remarks.<\/p>\n
During his visit to the university campus, Iliescu handed over
\nsome 20 books on reform and globalization, national integration,
\nand poverty elimination that he wrote.<\/p>\n
President Iliescu had lunch at Yogyakarta Palace with Sultan
\nHamengkubuwono X and visited Borobudur temple in the Central Java
\ntown of Magelang before flying to Bali through Adi Sumarmo
